Lessons from Lord Jagannath

On the auspicious occasion of Ratha Yatra, when lakhs of devotees are pulling the chariots of the lord of the universe , I am siting in my room thinking about the greatness of the god and writing this. Lord Jagannath, who is the head of the universe, teaches us great lesson from his activities.
The most important lesson is that the one who does wrong gets its result. Even God is not spared . Lets talk about the 'Laxmi Purana' by the great Odia poet Balaram Das . It teaches us great social values and lessons. As we all know the story, Maa Laxmi gets pleased with the worship of Shriya Chandaluni, who is a lower caste women. With her prayer Maa Laxmi visits her. But this is not acceptable to Lord Jagannath and his elder brother Lord Balaram . So with the advice of Balaram, Jagannath gives order to Maa laxmi to leave shree Mandir. But the story does not end here..
The above decision is an injustice not only to Maa Laxmii but also to all other womens. This is also a fuel to divide the society on the basis of caste. Because the common people will follow the life of God. But with the flow of time, situation changes . Due to their misdeed , lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra were punished. They lost their everything. They became the beggars and even they don’t even get food to eat. At last they reached to Maa Laxmi, whom they had dismissed from shree mandir. They realise their mistake and apologize for that . Maa Laxmi forgives both. This is not  a mere story . It teaches us great lesson that disrespecting women ,underestimating women or discriminating anyone on the basis of caste ,creed ,colour or gender is at not all forgiveble. You have to pay for it whoever you may be.

Today we are fighting among each other in the name of our our religion . But lord Jagannath did not discriminate us by labelling as Hindu or Muslim. We all are aware of the famous story of Salabega ,who is a muslim father. When he was not allowed to the Rath yatra for being a muslim, Lord Jagannath himself moved to the sand chariot of Salabega. The Nandighosa stopped. This is the power of love, faith and devotion. Lord Jagannath being black in colour destroys racism. For this reason, among the Odias he is known as 'Kalia thakura' .The lord loves all ,takes care of all even animals. In the words of Salabega ,'Gajaraja chinta kala thai ghora jalena, chakra preti nakra nasi udhrile apana' that means when a elephant cried for in touble in deep water, the  God saved him by sending his chakra.
The great odia poet 'Jagannath Das ' in his famous Odia Bhagabat says, 'Martya mandale deha bahi , debata hele hein marai' that means if you are living on earth then you have to die even if you may be the god. Lord Jagannath proves himself right in his humanitarian activity. On the reoccurrence period of every 12 or 19 years , Nabakalebar occurs. That means the god leaves his body and the new deities are made . Is it not a great lesson to us ? If the God has to die then who are we to be so much arrogant about our life ? No one is  immortal . This is the ultimate truth of life that god proves here.
Besides these there are so much things to be learnt from lord Jagannath. It is not feasible to discuss those all here.  Putting status in what's app or visiting puri on ratha yatra is surely a way of devotion. But, the real devotee is who loves the god from the core chamber of his heart and follows the values and lessons of Lord jagannath.

                                  JAY JAGANNATH
